|
|
My son's "49" 8N appears to have a blown head gasket, antifreeze in the oil.
We removed the hood and tank, removed all the nuts on the head but the head won't budge.
We tried to loosen it by beating with a block of wood and hammer but no luck.
He has been putting penetrating oil around the studs, but we are stuck.
Does anyone have any tips for loosening the head? |

Get some rope and make sure it is small enough to fit in the spark plug holes. Then turn the engine to the point that #1 and #4 are at the bottom of there stroke. Put the rope in both those cylinders and then turn the engine over from the crank pulley, if you have a hand crank it is a lot easier to do it or a crank from say an Allis B/C or Farmall A/B. Having the rope in the cylinders will push up on the head from both ends and should push it right up and off. Another way but it makes a mess is to fill those 2 cylinders with oil and put the plugs back in and hit the starter button and then head should jump right off but boy waht a mess doing it that way can make |

Can I reuse the same studs for the head or do they have to be replaced? |

Leave the spark plugs in the head, and hit the starter a few times. Compression in the cylinders should push the head loose. |

I have never replace them unless of course you happen to brake one. |
