A friend of mine has a 3020 JD that quit running. Last fall he was baling hay, the tractor got hot and quit. We pulled her back to the shop and it wouldn"t turn over. We thought the engine was locked up, but the next day the engine will turn over But will not start? Someone told us it probably has a cracked head and leaked coolant into the cylinders causing it not to start. Can"t figure out why it acted like it was locked up and now engine rolls over?
Any ideas what we should look at first? Think it is a head problem. NO oil in coolant or coolant in oil?
Next, if it is a head? What would a ball park figure be on repairs?
If total rebuild, ball park on what it would cost to get it going again?
Next, if it cost too much for us to fix.
What is a Non running 3020 worth?
Thanks guys, we are a little discouraged.

Wow, That's a lot of tough questions,,There is a 'strong' posobility that a bearing may have spun, causeing it to lock up,,when it cooled down it let go, but is dragging enough to keep it from starting,,and this is all a quess, has it lost much coolant?, 3020's don't have a lot of head trouble normaly, and if it had a crack it would have been spewing water out the stack to cause it to quit like that,,Is it getting fuel and if it is check the timeing of the injector pump, something could have caused the timeing to change , like pump failure, or even crankshaft gear key shearing, check over the basic things "before" you start tearing into it..

Thats an important question John, I was calling it a diesel, if it's a gas that would change the plan of the problem solveing.....

It has plenty of coolant and didn't notice any coming out exhaust before it quit. I bet you are correct about the spun bearing. Repairing is going to depend on cost. Money is tight now and have another tractor to use. I hate to junk it or let it sit, it is in good shape and was a power house.

Bar the engine over and look at the injection pump to see if it is turning. Could have A siezed inj. pump. Does sound more likely the thrust main bearing has spun or the balancer stuck and then let loose when it cooled. I would check the pump then pull the oil pan and look at the main caps to see which one is dry and/or blue.
