Hi, I have a 1950 8N thats been sitting under my barn for 4 years. Decided to get it running and sell it. Ran fine when parked. Wouldnt start, so....replaced the battery, cleaned all electrical connections, replaced cap rotor, points, condenser, coil, plugs, drained gas, cleaned sediment bowl, had carb off several times and cleaned, replaced gaskets. Got it started, got it charging, but runs rough, hesitates, backfires, engine bogs a little when you turn the lights on, trying to adjust the carb is no help. Just had the front mount dist off again and noticed th tangs on the back where it fits into the crank look worn, like the dist may have been loose at one time, crank looks ok. any ideas? This ones got me. Thanks, Steve

What are you setting the points at??? Since it is a front mount the points need to be set at 0.015 and if you misread the manual and set them at 0.025 like for the side mounts they will not run well. Next will it still run if you pull the main jet adjustment screw all the way out?? If it does then your carb still need work

Is that turning it in or turning it out?? Do you get black smoke as you turn it out??

[quote="old"](reply to post at 15:20:49 03/18/10) [/quoteHi, Turning it either way, seems to take several turns to make a differance. Went to start this morning, wanted to catch but didnt, and I noticed gas flowing fron the carb.

Either you flooded it by over choking or the float valve isn"t closing. Sometimes the float hangs and rapping it with a block of wood will get it to un-hang. Check your spark. Should be fat and bluish white, the color of lightning. if you have a good spark, check the timing( it pretty hard to mis-time a front mount as I understand it) and if that is good, the problems in the fuel system (dirty carb, misadjusted, etc).

Just pulled a plug, very little spark, will try setting timing again, I think the dist tang being worn may be the problem. wondering if the ignition switch may be a factor, key feels loose.

Timing doesn"t cause a weak spark, misadjusted points do. Check the point adjustment and then run through the primary electrical circuit to see if you are getting low voltage to the coil.
