Hi all,
I have recently purchased a broken down Super Major.
I have only really dealt with the earlier models before, and this tractor is not quite the same.
It is a 1962 model engine 1592338 it seems to be a transition from Power Major as it still had red wheel centres and different bonnet and front cowl emblems, our later super majors here had white wheel centres and white paint out in the front emblem and no bonnet side emblem.

I had a look at another one here and my suspisions seem to be right that the early ones still had some of the earlier bits, however I am not sure about the injection pump type though should it be a Simms type ot the later type?

Our wheels here in Australia are completely different to anywhwere else, I think they must have been made locally to save importing really heavy cast iron wheel weights.

I worked with a guy once that said he worked on the Assembly line in Perth WA, he said they came to WA as a basic engine and drive line and all the externals were put together there, I suppose the Blue paint could be a bit different also.

Ever since I saw a 6cy Ford industrial engine in the industry I was working I had thought of fitting a 6cy engine to a Fordson, now I am in a position to do it!
I have a engine out of a Class combine it is close the the tractor date of 22 F 2, the 6cyl engine is S 244242 L 28 F

I have the bigger air cleaner that was on the combine also, so the air intake will be correct but the battery will have to be changed to make room.

By accident I found a guy ( Mike ) here in my local town who served his time at Dagenham and is really helpful, he was the local Ford tractor parts man since about the late 1970's, he a wealth of knowlege.

Mike had a mechanical business in our wheat belt in the late 60's and he converted about a dozen Fordsons to 6cyl for broad acre ploughing and seeding, so he is interested in my trying to re create some 1960's history.

In doing this project it is my aim to modify as little as possible and try to make it look like something that Ford ( or County )would have produced.

My next move is to work out how to reduce the battery size to allow for the increased air cleaner size. off to my battery supplier!

I have noticed that Ford do not seem to have made a Power Major in some countries.

From my observations here we had the first new majors which evolved into the narrow belt 1958 models and in 1959 the engine was upgreaded with a different block and head with better porting, ( I rebuilt my dad's one like this ) the next model or evolution was to the Power Major, mine is a 1961 model eng 1568707 apart from the instruments etc is is much the same, though the rockers are a different ratio giving more valve lift and more power, though this did require a further reworking of the cylinder head to provide more clearance.

This is about where my knowlege runs out, so far as I know that there are at least two Super Major configureations and maybe three.

Any information appreciated Mike from West Australia, and before you ask we are still above the water level, it rarely floods here.

I don't understand your concern about the aircleaner. I think all the conversions I've seen use the original tractor aircleaner.

If you can leave your email open, I could send you photos.

I have seen a few photos of conversions posted on various sites and they had a larger air cleaner.
The original 4cyl air cleaner size was not to my knowlege fitted to an original 6cyl eng, as it would be stalving for air, or the air speed would be too fast to filter the air effectivley.
I do not know what the Thames Trader used though?
I am planning so far to use the exact air cleaner designed for and fitted to the 6cyl eng originally, the original manufactures must have a good reason to set it up this way.

This is my first posting on this site so bear with me if I am not driving this thing correctly, the first vechicle I drove was a 1959 Fordson Tractor.
