If it is an older 4430 it has the old style steering setup and would have to be bled out. It's been a while, but I remember putting a clear tube over a bleeder and running it to the back of the tractor fill tube, and cycling the steering while opening and closing the bleeder. It would steer one way no problem and then I would have to open the bleeder to get it to go all the way in the other direction. The serive manual didn't say anything about using the loader to lift the front end off the ground, but it makes it easier if you have one.

yea bleed it first bleeder is on right side of steering valve under dash cowl. count how many revolutions from far R to L then go back 1/2 that. crack bleeder turn right to stop. close bleeder. go back to center. crack bleeder go left to stop, close bleeder. i think. may have it backwards

If a Late model, are you thinking its a bur or some trash in the steering valve spool up under the hood?

As Tim's already suggested that would depend if it's an early or late model.

The 4430 tractor is a 1977 model. I usually bleed the air by cycling the steering wheel left and right several times, however that doesn,t seem to work now. Thanks for all your help. Roy

Your tractor has the metering valve system which has no bleed screw. Before I called the JD shop I'd plug a 3000 psi gauge into one of the scv's and check stand-by psi. It should be in the 2250-2350 psi range. I'd also check the screens in the steering block under the hood. I just hate paying $75-$85 per hour to people that may know less than I do about my tractors problem.

You are exactly correct. I have overhauled both ends at the same time ,and they bled them selves just fine.
