fordson super major

I just bought a fordsonsuper major with a backhole on it.I'm told its 1962-1964 the only numbers i could find is on the side of the block which are s529108 is that theserial numbers.I haven't been able to get it started would it have a pressure relief valve for the compression?

I think that is a casting number...If before 11/61 it could have 7 numbers.Have a look on the block near the injector pump.Should be ....2 numbers.. a letter..6 numbers..a letter.
If there is not a lever on the front of the valve cover then it does not have a decompressor , don"t think they had one, mine doesn"t. although the FMD does, suspect they stopped there.

Does it have fuel to the injectors? Crack a line loose and crank it over to see if your getting fuel to the injectors. I have a 62'it does have the decompression lever.

She has had a replacement engine. "S" numbered engines are industrial units that were used on combines and other applications.

The usual problems are blocked fuel filters/air un the system. Have you opened the bleed screws on the filter and pump, then used the hand primer to get rid of air?

A picture would be a great help as these tractor engines were slightly different and it could be an aid to finding the problem.

Yes It does I put a new primary pump on it and hooked up an electric pump to it I got the fuel going up to the injectors but it still wouldn't kick if I give it a shot of eithor in the air intact it'll kick.according to marshals machinery the local kabota shop. they said I don't have enuff compression for it too run.
could the injectors be gummed up from sitting for 5 years?

Howdy There:
i have a 1961 FSM, though it has a motor from the FPM line, it does have a decompression lever on it.
It was built in February of 1961 and that was the time when the Power Major became the Super Major, so my tractor has a little of the old and the new mixed in....One thing that i dont see on your motor is that the return line to the tank is missing...that or i just cant see it in the picture.
Make sure that it is plumbed in correctly otherwise you"ll get air in the line and it will be difficult to start!....check to see if the fittings at the tank and the motor have no hairline cracks in them...one way to check is to crank the motor over a few times and check for air bubbles at the fittings...These lines are made of copper and over time from vibrations at low RPM"s they start to crack....that will be the fitting at the back of the motor, raps around the backside and turns left through the firewall, past the battery compartment and directly into the tank....But it seems that you might have bad cylinder rings, leaky injectors at the head to injector hole"s, and/or need a new head gasgit....

You have a Minimec pump. There are two bleed screws under the injector lines, open these and make sure you have air free diesel coming out of these when you operate the primer.

You do not have a fuel filter. This can be bad news.

The engine stop control,half hidden by the plastic fuel pipe should be forward to run, in the centre of the pivot is a button/shaft which is the excess fuel button. This can stick and cause non starting/low power. Move the lever forward and grip the shaft with a pair of pliers and gently pull this outwards. If it comes out, try to start again.

If it will run on ether, you have a fuel problem rather than a compression one. These tractors will run and start easily in a very worn state.

Get back to us again if this does not work.
