I inherited a Fairbanks Morse Z type C engine which has a crack on one of the ears on the base. The ear did not completely break off, but there is a substantial crack of an inch or inch and a half long.
What should I expect to pay a welder to patch this up so it does not completely break off? Does this affect the value of the engine?

Vee the crack with a grinder, then weld it with Nickel-99 welding rod. Peen the weld after doing about an inch, then weld some more. You can grind it smoothe so it doesn't show.
