New to site, but came as soon as I heard!lol. Have an unknown year Dexta that I am restoring. Was a real mess when I bought it, but have since pieced it together. It now runs (hard to start)drives, and can pull box blade, but has a large amount of smoke that smells alot like un-burned fuel. The history is that the fuel tank was full of gunk and sludge at the bottom and the fuel filter case (no filter in it)was full of sludge as well. Not having the money and being adventurous I decided to tear into the pump (mechanical) and have a look as well. Didn't notice any real debris in the pump, but had to be there with no filter installed. I did have two broken plunger springs though. I have since completely purged the system, installed fuel filter, fresh fuel, and installed new plungers & springs and injector tips. Has been alot of fun getting the old girl up and running, but now it's time to get to the next phase. In short, the tractor has obviously been handled by people that are not so mechanically inclined. In being said there are alot of things out of adjustment I'm sure. Currently I have gone through the complete fuel system from fuel tank to injector tips and have checked the timing. From what I read it sounds like the best advise anyone has is to not mess with the pump etc.but it's too late for that. Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as far as trouble shooting the smoke. Also would like to know just how far the adjustment screw is supposed to be screwed in or backed out. It's the screw with a hole in the top (for wire) and has lock nut that jambs down on top of the injector pump. Any help would be great! Also, Any advise as to how to set the injectors would be very helpful as well! |

Injectors need checked on poptester for spray pattern and opening pressure. Injection pump may need internal phase timing reset if any pump elements have been replaced. Full load fuel screw can be set with tractor on PTO dyno. If you like, call 574 893 4172 after 7 PM, have been repairing pumps & injectors since 1976. |

Thanks for the reply Rich. As you mentioned, I"m certain everything needs to be calibrated etc. I know I"ve completely gone through the injectors a number of times questioning if the spray pattern was right and if they are opening properly. Delivery valves and injectors for cylinders 1&2 seem to be fine, but number 3 just doesn"t seem like it sprays anything like it is supposed to. Even with a new injector tip. If I remove the number 3 line from the delivery valve on the injector pump it doesn"t seem to be producing the solid stream of fuel like the others either. When I went through the pump I didn"t notice anything other than some pits on the cam lobes (from metal debris from cracked springs?) and some corrosion to the front bearings that the cam shaft rides on. With that being said and the fact that all three plungers, barrels, and springs are new what would your best guess be? One thing for sure is "internal phase timing" is waaay outside my area of expertise. Any and all ideas are most certainly welcome and thanks for the info so far. |

Farmer-Tek , you might want to checkout the Fordson Tractor Pages at "fordsontractorpages.nl"
The Dexta forum covers all the Dexta/Super Dexta/New Performance Dexta and Petrol Dexta in detail, well worth a look. TSG. |
