Backhoe moves backward just fine but it only moves forward now and then. Usually when it has sat still for a long time,(days maybe weeks)it goes forward a few times and then it just quits. Now if you start going forward it will keep going. When you shift to reverce and then try to go forward it just doesn't hook-up.

Sounds like the forward clutch pack may have died.

Thank you sir, That sounds cheaper then the shuttle valve. We priced one several years ago and they wanted more for the valve then the hoe would be worth. It's a good strong piece of iron and it would be a shame to junk it. Any idea how much for the clutch pack? We can split the tractor and do the work ourselves.

Don't know the price of a clutch pack but I know of few parts on a 4500 that aren't expensive. Splitting the tractor is the hardest part. Once you are in far enough to do the F&R clutches you might as well put new 'o' rings in the forward/reverse valve. I don't think there is much to it. Don't know if any special tools are needed for the clutches. Can't hurt to look at the pump also. BTW a pressure check of the pump wouldn't hurt before you take anything apart. Can be done off the fitting under the access port on the bottom of the bell housing.
