Assuming the joystick controls are still available you would be better served to talk to a salesman rather than a parts man. The joystick used to be available through Whole Goods and would be much cheaper going that route. If the joystick is not available that way now you have no choice but to order it through parts (pricey) or go with some kind of aftermarket control which is readily available and most of the time work very well. I got mine through Surplus Center in Nebraska. Mike

JD web site has a parts book online with the info. A phone call to a minimum wage kid doesn't work around here either.

I bet they still have one. Here is a picture of one we put on our 4240 about 5 years ago, and if you look closely it says "John Deere" right on the joystick housing. Call back and talk to someone that knows something.

Make sure you're sitting down when you price the one from JD wholegoods. I wanted one after the one that came with our westendorf loader kept falling apart and it was $1300 that was 10 yrs. ago. Still don't think that was right but got the one for the older tractor from northern tool and haven't had a chance to put it on yet.

The thing that no one has mentioned, is that you must purchase a power beyond block to go behind your first SCV to supply and return your oil. Even if you use a ported filter cover, you will still need a place to get the oil. They are around $200 from deere parts. Comes in a kit that will have everything you need. Don't get to thinking you will save a buck and get the oil by putting a tee in the high pressure line just after the steering and brake supply tee. The loader will work great, but nothing else will while your using the loader. Such as the steering wheel. As far as the valve goes, just go aftermarket. You can get joystick and cable kits for both cross and prince valves. I put a cross in my cousin's 4240 last year. It worked out nice. Had to bend the handle a bit to make it comfortable. The quad range shifters get in the way to put the stick where you want it. Syncros aren't quite so bad, and a power shift wouldn't be a problem at all. I don't like leaning and reaching for a joystick, as we do alot of loader work.

No, you don't have to have the ported filter, because the return off the 1st remote makes a beline to the filter, not the sump. If it is the Northern setup that I am thinking about. I think that the stick is on the valve. You want your valve on the loader subframe or mounted on the fram rail of the tractor. You only want cables running up in the cab, not hoses with oil. I have seen, even dealers mount valves on the loader frame, and not the subframe, but that is not user friendly. You want to be able to remove the loader without doing anthing but uncoupling the hoses going to the loader. Just my thoughts.

I had a 158 loader with a JD joystick on a 4240 and then moved it to a 4255 and neither tractor had the "power beyond block" and they both operated excellent. I just plumbed the hoses into the RH side of the tractor similar to 3020/4020's with ind loader valve.

I purchased a joystick/valve from A&I last year for my 3020. good quality and a lot cheaper than Deere. Also was considering Shoup, but Deere owns most of A&I so i thought it would be the better choice.
