Respirator and sprayer suggestions.

Im going to be using John Deere Classic Green paint for my 60 project. Ive got an older cheapie HVLP gun that is about ready to be replaced. It will mostly be used for painting aluminum boats and tractors etc. Nothing fancy. Any suggestions on a new gun setup?

Also, what about a resperator setup? Even though I spray outside I need to get something better than a regular dust mask. The john deere paint is a synthetic enamel and the boat paint I use is marine oil base enamel.

A charcoal mask with new filters that fits right is ok. About $30+. If you use hardener you need a supplied air system, $300+. Dust masks do nothing but keep part of the solids out of your nose. They do not filter the fumes at all.

I believe the problem you are having with your HVLP gun is the tip. I believe they all come with a 1.4mm tip. If you would drill out the orifice to a larger size I believe it would make your gun spray the alkyd better. The smaller tip is more suited for automotive paints that are thin as water. As far as the respirator I use a 3M disposable respirator. Any canister respirator is just going to minimize the exposure to the paint. If you use an isocyanide hardener, use it in a well ventilated area and hold your breath when you are down wind from the paint. Then when the project is done dispose of the respirator. The stuff can make you think you're a lifelong chain smoker. Anyone that sprays very much of it should have an air supplied respirator.

I havent tried to spray any of the John Deere paint yet. Im just going off of the condition of the gun last time I cleaned it. It cost less than $20 when I bought it new. Ive gotten more than my moneys worth out of it.

Im not planning on using hardener. Where do you get the 3m respirators?

NAPA (or other automotive paint stores) carries them.

I've seen the 3M disposable respirators at Sherwin Williams but I buy mine at English Colors which is a automotive paint supply company. If you don't use the isocyanides there is no reason to throw it away after the project.

napa will have our charcoal respirators. you can also go to any body shop paint supplier and get them. a good 3m disposable respirator will set you back around 30 dollars. also, get a new empty one gallon paint can while you are there. keep your respirator sealed in the paint can when not in use. it will last a lot longer. also pick up some disposable nitrile gloves. wear them when mixing and painting. it keeps the solvents from getting absorbed into your skin. a pair of disposable painters coveralls are handy also, keeps the lint down off your clothes and keeps the chemicals off your skin. one with a hood is even better. as far as a new paint gun, it will depend on your budget. a good sata or iwata will set you back 400 to 600 dollars. for about 150 dollars, napa has a nice little outfit from evercraft. has a touch up gun, and main gun with a 1.4 and a 1.7 mm tips and meter rods. for the money the guns are pretty good. heres a pic.
