trailer house tires

does any one here pull a trailer with trailer house axles under it? ive got a old heavily built trailer, that has them,with the 14.5" tires. we used it for a long time ,but always had trouble with it blowing tires, so it was sort of just used around the farm for hauling hay and things. is there a tire that fits these wheels thats really rated for hyway speeds? seems like we never had problems unless we were pulling it down the hyway,so im thinking that maybe the buildup of heat was what got them. or should i look at something else,the axles were cut when the trailer was built and shortened ,but they look straight and i see no evidence of tire running out of line.I need to move a couple of tractors,and my other trailer requires you to move wheels as far in as possible every time so i would like to use this one.but it gets expensive replacing tires all the time.any ideas/suggestions as what to look for?

Search for 14.5 inch lowboy trailer tires; they're out there in E and F (and maybe other) load ranges; probably about 100-120 bucks each.

thanks,i'll check it out. this is a good old trailer,plenty heavy for anything i would ever need, but its a real pain changing a tire every time you use it.

need to blow them up to max inflation, that will keep them from blowing out, heat kills those tires real bad

Thanks,I'll watch that, dad was always one of those blow them up till they looked right types, so they were probably always low. I havent pulled the thing on the hyway in probably four or five years,but i'll be sure and check them before i drag it home. tires were all good then but I'll have to see how weathered they are now. I can borrow a trailer easy enough but i dont like to when i have a trailer we supposedly had built just for this.Six or seven trailers here not counting boat trailers and they all, like everything else ,need tires.

In Pa, if the tires says "mobile home only", they are not legal on the highway for anything else.
There are tires in 14.5 that are for utility trailers and are DOT rated.

thanks, never even gave a thought to the dot. these tires definitly came off a mobile home, dad used to buy every one he could find at auctions and things.

I know what you are going thru with the house trailer tires. I had the same problems , I could get about 500 to 1000 miles on new tires , then they blew or thru the tread.
How I fixed the problem , found 6 ,16" truck rims , took them & the 14.5" rims to a welding shop , he cut the small ones down , then fitted & welded the 16" ones to the 14.5" rims . That way they would bolt rite up like before. Bought used 16" tires , never had problems after that . B T W. had them balanced . Pulled that trailer many thousand miles , no problems. clint

I bought "low boy" tires for my trailer, leagel for highway etc. Low air kills those tires, if it says 90 it don't mean 45 BTDT.

i have a 3 axle home built trailer with those axles under it, it was built in the early '70's mobile home use tires are just that, use them once or twice and thats it, mine got replaced with 'lowboy use' tires way back, and we have had good luck with them, as mentioned below keeping them inflated to the max pressure is criticle to there lasting, ive blown a few but now its time itself thats getting them, 2 of the ones left are 10 to 12 years old now, and need replacing, we also went in and replaced the wheel bearings with good quality ones as well as the wheel seals, 0 problems with those, your trailer will be fine if you spend the money for the low boy tires

Years ago I hauled mobile homes cross country and boy was it a fun job. Those tires and axles where used and used again and again but yep common to blow a tire when going hwy speeds. I us to be able to pick up those tires cheap but then it was because I was in the line of work. There is a 15 inch rim made to fit those axles and low boy tires also in the 14.5 size. Of you can switch to a lug bolt type hub so you can use the better more common rims.

Carlisle makes DOT rated tires for 14.5" wheels. Load ranges from d-g I believe.

my trailer had them on there. i bought new brake hubs from trailerpart.com. i put 8 bolt rims on it and i run truck tires. probably not the best thing to do but works well for me
