Thanks in advance for any insight to this problem.

Here is the situation with my To-30. New cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil,and a pertronix electronic ignition. New ignition switch and all new wiring. New gas tank, sediment bowl and fuel line.

Quick to start up and runs smoothly for approximately 3-5 minutes then loses power, sputters, backfires and then quits. Checked spark....strong and bright. Gas flows hard and fast from bottom of carb. It will then not restart until it cools off a bit. Then it will happen all over again. I do notice that the exhaust manifold gets extremely hot very quickly; more than I ever recall on any tractor. Could I possibly be looking at a manifold leak or exhaust valve problem?

Has tractor been sitting? I had a farmall cub with underslung exhaust that did same thing. Mud daubbers had clogged exhaust pipe. I would try unhooking exhaust pipe and see what happens.

Is the gas tank vented? You might try loosening the gas cap and see if that cures the problem.

Check for weak coil after it's hot.

most likely a carb problem. take carb off after you have tried everything else and check float for proper setting. a carb rebuild kit might not be a bad idea.

Hot manifold is usually a result of an excessively lean mixture and /or retarded timing.

Check you spark immediately when it stops running. If you have a 12V system, it could be you have a 1.6 ohm coil without a current limiting resistor.

Yesterday the exact same thing happened to my TO35. The problem was what Jerry/MT said. A 12v. 1.6 OHM coil with no external resistor,and the points were burned. New points and condenser with a 3.6 OHM 12v. coil and all is right with the world!

UPDATE: Thank you for all your advice. I had a little time this week to check out everything again.

It would start on the first bump of the starter and run smoothly for anywhere from 40 seconds to 2 minutes. Then sputter, backfire, and quit. Pulled coil wire and had strong bright spark. Electronic ignition recently installed...so no condensor or points problems. Gas always flowed strong and fast from bottom of carb. Exhaust pipe removed to assure no blockage.

After stalling out, I could immediately restart and purr smoothly for 30 to 90 seconds. Then repeat again. Today revealed a potential clue......water in the oil. But no oil in the radiator. Cold this be the AH-HAH! moment?

Today's project was adding one can of K&W block seal. In a day or 2, I'll see how things hopefully improve.
