I'm getting ready to install a new gear shift boot on my WC. Should I put any grease around the gear shift rod where it enters the recess in the top of the transmission cover? I cleaned out the accumulated dirt and old grease that was in there.

I can't see where it would hurt. I use to do that with all the manual trans. I worked on to help prevent wear.
