Is there any short commings to the early engine single block?? Is it a 283? Should i avoid it? To answer your question i am looking at this as antique, but to work haying a little bit.

yes the one piece block and head engine is a 283. it is the same as the later 283 engine except you cant change the juggs and the heads like you can on the later ones. they are still a good engine as far as i know and would probably work out good for haying and small farm work. just not that good for pulling cause cant change out the jug and heads to build horsepower.

this was a 283 crankcase with a 403 crank and hd800 juggs and 4233 heads. the only problem i had was the starter drives till i bout a racket type that had rubber in it. it dynoed 170hp and pulled 3rd gear at little over 8mph with a 35000 lb sled. it got so bad pulling with it that all the guys that out pulled me when i had the 403 stopped pulling against me. most pulls it was only me and one other guy. i ran it for almost 3 years with no problem which the best moline man in the south put it together and tuned it. i ran it on propane with a carb off a hd800. it was a man but the guy i sold it to messed with the timing and he busted a jug and piston in it cause of detonation. the last i talked with him he said it was better now but i dont beleive it. i think he messed it up cause he did it right after he bought it cause of not listening to the guy that built it about wanting to change things on it. it only turned 2400rpms.
