Is the interior dimmer (by the light switch)turned all the way down? Check that first.

I have a 1999 F150 that the odometer does the same thing. I am told it is a solder joint on the circuit board that is bad. They are some fellows around here that fixes them. I have not had it done but I would like to one day.

My 2002 Saturn VUE the light that illuminates the odometer burnt out. Had to take the dash apart to see. If you shined a light on it you could see the numbers changing so I knew it still functioned and was keeping track. We changed a few bulbs while in there. I actually had a shop do it.

Check out the link below. There are several threads on speedo issues.

My sons and I have bought, fixed, and sold many S-10's. The forums are a great source of info.
