I bought this old Jones Model 4800 hand held mechanical tach. It is missing the two external cone shape rubber drive inserts. As old as this is I understand them missing.

Anyone here have an idea where I could purchase replacements?

Thanks, Tom

Might be just as easy to make the darn things. If it was mine I think I'd start on the pages of the McMaster-Carr Supply catalog and see if they have anything rubber that is close to what I needed, might find some O-ring stock or maybe even one of those funky round rubber belts, rubber extrusions, some kind of packing or round gasket stock.

You would have to call them and find out which one would fit but McMaster has several types with replacement tips available:

Contact Tachometer and parts

I bet Cratex grinding bobs could be made to fit and ground to a cone shape.

I'd think someone could turn them on a lathe out of a block of rubber.... Frozen hockey puck comes to mind.

I don't even think you would need a lathe, chuck it in a drill and shape it with sand paper or any other tool you have handy that'll give you the shape you need, especially it you get round rubber stock the right diameter to squeeze into your collets.

Wisbacker, You're close to my thoughts. But, how about some RTV in a tube and kinda shape it before it sets up? ohfred41

I have made them for years. I just stop at any good hardware store and buy rubber plugs/stoppers. I then trim them with a utility knife to about the size I want. I then finish them off with the screen type emery cloth. I usually get them to fit tight enough that they will stay in without any help. If I get one that is loose I just clean everything up and silicone it in. Let it dry and trim the extra off.

Almost. I have found somethings they don't quite carry. I needed a radial spring for my JD LUC carb choke. They didnt have one that was exact enough. I ended up going to a piano repair shop with my calipers and got the correct size of piano wire and made my own.

Are you talking about the spring that streches accross the choke plate to hold the flapper closed ? If so I get them at my local New Holland dealer. Same size fits in 8N Fords.

Got it done, sorta!

I pulled the concave rubber drive out of the metal driver, turned it over, stuck it in the freezer in my garage.

Chucked it in my drill motor and held it against the turning grinding wheel of my pedistal grinder. Will work till I find rubber stock.

Thanks
