NAA steering problem

I am having trouble turning right- left is a lot easier. I have to leave the acorn nut loose to turn right - tightening it makes it harder to turn right.gearbox is full of gear oil.
Does this need to be rebuilt or adjusted ?

all the acorn nut does is hold the steering wheel onto the steering shaft splines.. so i'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that your bottom thrust bearing has disintigrated, and your wormshaft is screwing way down into the box and bottoming out on the steering wheel.

box needs to come apart for thrust bearings and possibly races .. or at lest inspection.

you should plan on replacing sector cover seals, lube and then readjusting sector backlash afterwards.

Soundguy thank you - this saturday I will take this thing apart. do you know if the bearings can be bought from an auto parts store ? I am 58 miles from the nearest dealer

i've ordered them online, and bought from a seal / bearing supplier.. and in a pinch, bought from a tractor mechanic.

dealer MAY have them in stock.. may not.

I doubt that an autozone will have them.. though if you got a number might order them. if they cross to a bearing in an old car you might be in luck.

same deal with napa.. you might be able to get them with a part number interchange..

it's an ez box to rebuild... i've done very many... i think all but 3 of mine have been rebuilt.. and 2 of those are PS.. which I try not to mess with..
