I have the manual and it looks pretty straight forward removing the the cable if all goes well. My question is if I get the cable out can I run the tractor without the cable in place?

I don't know what it would hurt. Of course you will want to plug the hole to keep dust out and you will need to remove the cover in order to get the cable back in. I assume that this is a temporary thing but if ends up being long term and the shaft is turning constantly, I would put a cover over the PTO shaft to protect the seal.

Okay the PTO cable is out no visible damage and it moves freely. Guess the problem is further down.

Why would the PTO cable be unable to move on the tractor but move freely when removed? No rust on the cable just some old black grease.

My PTO cable did not want to move when installed. It was due to a part of the linkage inside being bent, causing interference between the linkage and the interior part of the cable housing. I straightened the bent part, installed and adjusted the cable and it works super nice now.

When you install the cable, you actually screw the end of the cable into a piece inside the transmission that moves the PTO control valve, so if the cable moves fine when not installed but doesn't move once it's installed, either it is not adjusted properly or the piece that it screws into isn't moving inside the transmission.

The situation that I had with mine is that the light gauge sheet steel linkage part moved back and forth as it should, and the cable moved nicely in and out when not attached. When assembled, however, the bend pulled the part that the cable threads into enough off center so that it rubbed firmly against the inside of the tube that extends downward from the cover.

The way to test that theory would be to remove the cable, with the handle and housing from the dash, and then remove the conduit from between the back of the dash and the top cover of the tranny, and then put the cable, handle and conduit all back together separate from the rest of the tractor and see if the cable slides in the conduit.

in and I pushed the
threaded part
inside out of
position I think.
Cable slides nice
but now I have to
pull the cover off.

This is why the manual tells you to thread the bottom section of the trans cable into the PTO to hold the linkage in place until you are redy to put the PTO cable in.a
