oil in water

I am thinking about buying an 8N with a 3 speed transmission and high/low tranny selector...

But... there is oil in the water...and water in the oil pan.

Question... what are the odds of a blown head gasket vs. a cracked block on this tractor?

Also, would parts be available for that transmission, as I have read that Ford went to the 4 speed tranny with the new 8N.

i would but it CHEAP because you dont know whats wrong and it would be a big risk to buy it and find out that the block is cracked, with oil in the water that sounds bad to me, im fairly new to fords BUT not to old tractors my 48 8N has the 4 speed the 3 speed with the high low would sure be nice mainly for the lower reverse gear...

9n/2n had the 3spd.. 8n had the 4spd


oil in water? if it is real oil and not combustion byproducts.. it has to be a block issue.. there are no oil passages in the head.

water in the oil? could be a gasket or block.. but the answer to the oil in water make sthe big difference.

engine is hosed as it sets.

she's worth scrap value.

I might pay 300$ if she had good tires...

you'd think.. but..

1, you can't test it.. it may be shelled out..

2, I know guys that salvage tractors that have shermans setting on the shelf.. they can't get 200$ out of a overdrive.. maybee 150.. and can't get 600-700 out of a combo. last time I talked to a guy he sold a combo for 500$ SHIPPED because he needed to eat that month.

market on salvage is bad.

I'm not a salvage kind of guy... i like to fix them vs parting them.. but do have a lil blood on my hands. If I go look at a non runner.. or one with a fatal problem.. I count value in tires adn rims, and honest to god bolt on parts I know are good.. .. things I can test right there.. etc. the scrap cast iron.. well.. that's a whole lot of work to drive over.. winch a hulk onto a trailer.. drive home.. gut it.. then drive to a scrapper and get a lil cash. you've got time and gas invested. last scrap job I did I broke even almost. I mean.. I paid my gas back/.. probably lost my but on time. got a couple parts for the shelf.. and otherwise.. wasted a week in unbolting things.. lets face it.. buying a machine to scrap and not making alot of money is alot of work. i'd rather put that work into one i'm refurbing.

I've still got about 1/3 to 1/2 of an N hiding in my barn from another salvage job i hauled home. most of the good is off it.. I'm down to a good rad rod, rim center, pan, trans casting. rear casting. tranny has bearings out of it.. but I see some good gears.

ring gear is gone.. but i havn't pulled pinion yet. gear teeth look ok though.. no chips.. it was a no money job, basket case....
can't make a 'living' on salvage... thus I now only buy a salvager if I need a specific item on it..previous one i bought SOLELY for rims , centers and rubber..

the op is free to do what he wants. i personally wouldn't touch it unless it was chap and loked real promising.. like soemthing a 500$ engine kit and whatnot might make a running sellable macine out of... anf heck.. even then.. where are you? say you pay 500 for the hulk.. put 650 into the engine and bare machine shop cost.. by the time you pour in oil you are at what? 1250$ on a 2n? that's darn close to going selling price.. sherman or not... what ya gonna make? 250$ maybee? that's a WHOLE LOT of work to make 250$.. I can buy N here for 800-1500$... many are setting out to sell at 1500 so long tires are rotting..

maybee in the north it's a better market.. down here it's dismal with joblessness.. theft is up too. 3 cyls tractors are going cheap again... heck.. I bought that 4600 last year for ? 3900$ or something stupid like that.

10ys ago you couldn't have bought a ratty 3000 for that $

ps.. i'm not trying to argue with ya. market may still be good in your area.. down here in fl.. it's not a fun economy to be living in...

i agree.. if I need a part and find a donor with the part cheaper than the part by itself.. it's a good buy...

i bought that one salvage i mentioned.. JUST for tires and rims. I needed all 4 for various projects.. the entire chassis was gravy as far as I was concerned... my investment was completely worth it in rubber and rims... but then.. i did that on purpose.. still have parts of that one i might use.. maybee...
