I have a 4000 and have looked at most of the sites that tell how to read the serial number and production codes, here is my model number DA214C, none of the sites mention the "A" it should be a number if I am reading correctly, the tractor is a diesel, ag model, (I think), 8 speed trans, with independent PTO.

Any help would be appreciated

DA2 as the first 3 characters of the model number means that it is a 4600, which was a little later model than the 4000. The 4600 was made from 1975 to 1981. The rest of the model number, 14C, matches your description of a diesel engine, independent PTO and an 8 speed transmission.

Post some pictures and we can help determine if the model number is correct. The numbers are stamped into the transmission housing, so if the transmission was ever swapped out, it would be stamped with the model number of the donor tractor.

What are the other 2 numbers that should have been found with the model number on the flat spot on the bell housing?

Also, check the under side of the rigth hood panel for a foil sticker. If it's still there, post those numbers as well.

DA2 = 4600
1 = diesel vert ex
4 = 540 Ind PTO
C = 8x2 manual trans

If it has the 3 piece swept back axle it is a 4600SU

The other numbers are,

9D30 seems to be missing the shift designator.

B503646x

I will have to look for pictures of the 4600 but it sure looks like a 4000 tin wise, there is no foil sticker under the hood either.

Thanks for the quick help

No, a 4600SU model number would start with DS1 or DS2.

The B503646x is a Basildon, UK serial number, but I'm not sure of the x at the end. The B and A serial numbers were not well documented anywhere that I know of.

9D30 is April 30, 1979. The UK made tractors often seem to be missing the shift designator from the production code.
