TO-20 Replacement Muffler?

New member, and my first post...

I purchased a 1950 TO-20 at auction a few weeks ago.

It's generally in good shape, but it does need a few things, the first being a new muffler.

The replacements available at the various websites seems to be reasonably priced, especially since they include the exhaust pipe.

Shipping cost is a killer, however, and I was wondering if this was an item that my local muffler shop or auto parts store might handle, or be able to build for me.

I'd expect to pay more from a local source, but would there also be a difference in quality? For example, I expect the local muffler guy, who does custom pipe bending, would use a heavier pipe.

Your localNew Holland or Case dealer might have the muffler on the shelf for you.
Give them a shout and see what you get.
Nothing special about the muffler. Once upon a time there was a heat shield made of asbestos under the foot rest above the muffler.

The current setup has the exhaust/muffler/tail-pipe as a single unit - no clamps, and no welds that I can see.

Is that something that an implement dealer would stock, or could order? (That's what the online sellers have, and probably what I'd prefer to stick with, as I'll replace the whole thing.)

The bend in the pipe, and the flared end on the exhaust pipe, where it clamps to the manifold, would be a little tricky.

There's a Massey-Ferguson/AGCO dealer nearby, so maybe I'll it check it out there. I ordered a parts manual for the TO-20, so I'll have the number.

The shop manual, which I also ordered, doesn't deal much with mufflers/exhaust pipes.

I saw one at Tractor supply that should work. They also have the flange clamp there.

Thanks, Tom. I checked TSC's website, and the one they carry for the 8N/9N/2N looks very similar - I'll take my old one off of the TO-20 in to compare, and see if it will work.

I have been informed the Fords and Fergys are different. Overall length is the issue as well as drop from the manifold.

I replaced the header/muffler assembly on my "50 TO-20 and the replacement I bought at TSC worked with some adjustments. I did not replace the asbestos heat shield and that required some welding/heat torching modifications to the cast iron flange off of the header where it attaches to the muffler pipe. Any local welder or muffler should be able to make the modification in about 10 minutes of work. Hope this is helpful....

Go to your local farm machinery dealer - who will be a Sparex agent - and ask their price for the following TE20/TO20/TO30 complete exhaust:

Part No: S.42513 Down swept Exhaust Pipe
Part No: S.60791 Horizontal Silencer
Part No: S.60654 Clamp

Your local exhaust shop would also be able to fabricate an exhaust and silencer.

For interest, here in Australia very few Fergy owners use the horizontal exhaust - most have upswept exhaust to avoid grass fires.

My local farm supply store (Orscheln's) has this one:

on the shelf for $29.99 or so.

What's the general opinion on Stanley mufflers? I did a search on the YT forum, and, at least in some other tractor applications, it seemed that folks thought they were a bit noisy.

I was kind of surprised to find the exact model I needed on the shelf in a local store.

505545M91 or M92 is correct. I think you still need the clamp Sparex No S.60654, which is probably their: "Special clamp MF-300 required."
