They are a JD built machine with a Kuhn cutter bar. They are not a bad machine but the repairs can be expensive. I would not recommend one as they are twenty plus years old. There are few of them left that are in good shape.

A buddy bought one this last winter/spring. It had perfect sheet metal but the cutter bar had a leak. He did not know that there is not a sight glass or a dip stick. You have to drain the whole cutter bar an measure an exact amount of gear oil and put it back in. He did not do this. He just filled it. Well that blew out the seals in about an hour of running it and then he locked up several bearing. This ruined a few gears. The parts bill was over $3000 with some being re-used that where not the greatest.

Also the whole cutter bar has to come off and be split for any kind of service. There is a row of bolts around the out side that clamp the two halves together. There is an oring that is long enough to go all the way around the two halves. Getting that in without it leaking is hard to do.

The JD 920 and JD 930 where the first total JD cutter bar machines. They where a lot better.

For a cheaper disk mower conditioner look at some of the New Idea machines. They are cheaper. They have a individual gear cases. They have a thicker cutter bar which does not mow quite as well but they are cheaper to repair.

I have a 920, I don't really care for it either. It just is so heavy and no matter how light you set the cutter bar it still just seems like it floats heavy. And its HP hungry. I'll get a new idea or new holland when this one come unglued.

I bought a NI 5209 grey this year and its great. Light enough for my old 4020 (I don't want to tax the tractor) but my opinion is you need to buy one in very good condition, because if the outside looks hard used, the inner parts will be too and they take $$$ and a good dozen hours to take apart and get back together. Plus, on mine, the main gear box was empty. If you get anything, you need to go over the machine carefully.
