JD 301AG PTO won't spin under load

I am a new owner of a 197? JD 301AG. It is the 8 speed transmission with park(no reverser). I found an issue with the PTO. It engages and spins with no load on it, but if I hook up my 6ft finish mower it won't spin. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I've only had 50s fergusons previously. It also has a pull knob between the shifters. What is the function of that?

Remove the sheet metal cover that gear shift levers protrude through and there should be a port to test pto clutch. PSI when engaged should be 165 psi. If pressure is low you could possibly have a cracked or leaking supply tube or leaking clutch seal. Don't continue trying to operate it until problem is corrected.

A dire need of an operator's manual. There are numerous functions and service items that are not obvious. A few lines on the Internet does not compare to a dozens and dozens of illustrations, specs and service items in the real JD OM. Don't waste your time and $ on an IT manual either.

In this instance the operators manual would only help to wedge the garage door open but not list diagnoses or repair.

The OM to ID the controls such as the mystery lever between
the shifters.
It goes without saying that a service manual for diagnosis
assistance is required.

So it sounds like the PTO uses hydraulics and isn't a 2 stage clutch type?

Yes if there's a control handle between the 2 gear shift levers then your tractor has a hyd operated pto.

Does engaging the PTO require shifting the PTO lever on the left side in gear and pulling up the center knob between the shifters? If so I haven't tried that yet.

Thank you for the assistance. Only having old fergusons before I didn't know you have to engage the PTO lever on the left side and pull the center knob up. The PTO now spins the mower.
