Hey all, I have a Bolens 1669 with a 16hp Briggs and Stratton Vanguard v-twin. The junk plastic starter drive gear went, as I'm sure is common with these. Is there some national secret to getting the top starter bolt out? I'm guessing it takes some kind of special tool...is there an upgrade to the plastic gear or is it designed to be the sacrificial part, instead of the flywheel ring gear. Any help appreciated!

Briggs sells a special universal socket pn 19353 for starter removal but same pricey, try useing a 13mm 12pt 1/4" drive socket & a univ joint,if too big to fit in try a 1/4" wobble extention.Briggs used two different drive assemblies with nylon gears on vanguard eng, both are designed to be used on flywheel with an aluminum ring gear,do not use a drive with a steel gear, these are designed for a flywheel with a steel ring gear.

Just want to add that the metal gear has 1 less tooth than the plastic gear does.

If your starter is having trouble pushing the engine over compression, The engine probably needs a valve adjustment.

A lot of those starter bolts have a Torx socket in the head. I usually can get them with a 1/2" 1/4 drive socket,it goes by the flat in the starter drive onto the bolt at an angle, but usually works.

Definitely try valve adjustment first!! You also have to KNOW the proper procedure as it does not set on TDC. Piston has to drop 1/4" past TDC. It has to set on compression relief cam.

Have you ever thought of looking on Ebay there are a lot of Briggs and stratton starters on there. If you buy a new one they start out around $ 80.00 on up.
