Any one out there got a bolens model 900? I got one and it looks identical to a 1000. Any differences? How many were built?

The 900 was built for two years. the 1964 would be a model 189-01, and the '65 a 189-02.

The 189 is the model number for the 900, and the -01 AND -02 are the 'production run' numbers. It gets further complicated as Bolens sometimes had multiple "production runs' in the same year, EACH run starting a 00101

Bolens started their Sns at 00101, so you can subtract 100 from the serial number to find out which number your is in the production run.

In later years, Bolens changed to putting the production run at the beginning of the Sn as opposed to tacking it on at the end of the model number. A 1977 Bolens G10 would be a model 1055 with a Sn of 0100101.

As for the difference between the 900 and 1000.

The 900 had the 8.25 Wisconsin S-8D engine and the hi/lo was changed by moving an idler puller from one belt to another. That was done by a rod on the dash tower.

The 100 had the 10 horse Wisconsin TR10D engine, and the hi/lo was in the transmission itself and changed by a lever on the top of the trans, and to the right of the gear shift lever.

The 900 is closer to the 800. The only real difference between the two are the wider tires on the 900, and the fiberglass seat/fender pan.

The Bolens 900 (model #189) was a model produced for 1964 & 1965.

It had an 8-1/4hp Wisconsin engine, and was equipped with a 3-speed transmission, however the tractor had effectively 6 speeds. ....There was lever to change from High range to Low range by moving an idler pulley from one engine drive belt to the other.

The Bolens 1000 (model #190) was 1965 only.

It had a 10hp Wisconsin engine, and a 6-speed transmission. ....The High-Low range change was done inside the transaxle.

There were other differences, but these were the two most prominent.

Bolens never released production figures to dealers, so I don't think you will ever learn how many were actually made.
