This message is a reply to an archived post by Janicholson on April 08, 2012 at 13:28:21.
The original subject was "Re: Farmall 300 Timing Marks".

I always thought that the first mark on the damper which passed under the pointer indicated some degrees BEFORE TDC. My 350U has 4 marks. I used the 1st to set valve lash and eyeballed the #1 on the cap so I"m sure I could have been off some. It did start within a couple of seconds (after new rings, valves, rod bearings, etc), so I couldn"t be TOO far off. Should I use a timing light? And which mark should I go for?

You are correct. The last mark is TDC. I am at times rotationally dislexic. Jim

My Operators manual says the mark by itself is TDC, the next is 16 degrees, the book doesn't specify what that is, the next is 22 degrees (at full 1925 rpm) for a gas or kerosene engine, the last is 30 degrees for a distillate engine, so apparantly the only two to be concerned with the TDC and 22, which is determined with a timing light.

The rpm I gave is for a 350 row crop, I don't have the data for a 350U -- the max rpm may be higher for the utility, but the marks will be the same, likely the 22 degrees is the same also, but may be at a higher rpm?
