I'm replacing the tail wheel tire. It has a 3.5X12" 4 ply tire on it now that has rotted off.
I've searched the archives and get opinions on sizes 4x12 or 4.5x12.
What size tire & ply rating did IH ship on this plow?
Being I had to remove the bearing cap to get the tire off I decided to clean it all out and put fresh grease in. I noticed that the entire hub assembly moved back and forth on the axle about 1/2" to 3/4".
Is that normal?

I think most guys are replacing them with either 12" boat trailer/SMALL equipment tires? (It is the same size as my concrete mixer tires.)
I dont think you will have much luck finding a direct replacement tire like that particular one.If you do,it will be "pricey"!!!! |

Miller tire has the correct size tire that looks like the one pictured, but it is pricey. I got a 4.00 - 12 at local tire dealer, they said the 3.50-12 was no longer available. |

The "correct" tail wheel tire is a 3.50-12, smooth tread, beveled. Just like in the picture above.
Miller tire sells them, to the tune of $105. http://www.millertire.com/products/implement-tires/rib-implement-tires/3-50-12/3-50-12-firestone-plow-tire/
Most of these plows aren't worth $105.
A trailer tire works just as well. I got one at Harbor Freight It may not last as long, but you're also not plowing 50 acres every spring either. Just a few rounds to make a garden, or a few times up and back at a plow day. |

You can get a 6-12 garden tractor almost anywhere... many times for free. Got a cleated tire on mine. Now it looks like a European plow. |

My #8 has the original steel tail wheel, and it will soon have the furrow and land wheels changed back to all steel. No more flat tires. |
