Need to do a quick replacement of the water pump on my '64 2010D. Is it really necessary to remove entire hood and grill assy, then the radiator, and finally the water pump and cover assembly per JD Service Manual? Appears that there is sufficient room to R & R the pump assy with the sheet metal and radiator in place. Anyone done it?

If you think there's room with radiator intact then try it. Be sure to place a piece of cardboard between rad. fins & WP to protect fins & hands.
