I have an international 364 with a BD154 engine and a CAV injection pump. The tractor has only 1200 hours. I use it for grass cutting only. It always ran good until today. I started cutting grass on the hill and i looked behind me and there was black smoke everywhere. I pulled it in the garage and it seems to be running smooth. Air filter good....cracked lines to each injector...rpm drops. If i pull the throttle wide open it does not respond fast and it dumps black smoke like hell. Any suggestions ........THANKS |

Hi John, does it do the same black smoke with clutch all the way to foot rest, ie transmission and PTO clutches dis-engaged?
How about engine load being caused by hydraulic loading, valve at front of seat in proper position, draft control fully forward? Does your 364 have two hydraulic pumps, one for PS and one for 3pt or one pump and a splitter for PS? Check hydraulic lines for being hot to the touch.

Clutch in or out....no change. There is only one hydraulic pump that does both. Yes draft and lift lever fully foward. Hydraulic lines are warm not hot |

My bet is its a fuel problem. maybe change the filters. if it has a bulb clean it. just start going though the fuel system i would almost bet money the problem is there somewhere |

I have not change the fuel filter as of yet. I however looked at the fuel bowl and the fuel is clean. No water. The return line is squirting fuel in the fuel tank. |

Hi John, so it would appear there is no transmission or hydraulic loading of the engine. AIR Flow was my first thought as well. I looked at caseih parts for 364 and there is a long rubber hose from air filter to air intake of manifold, check condition of that hose that it is not collapsing or remove the hose at intake manifold and see if it runs any better.
Does it start easily? No glow plugs required after first start?

The air intake hose was not collapsed shut but i did not look at the hose internally. After the initial start using the glow plugs.... it would start up multiple times afterwards without glowing it. |

Black smoke without engine under load usually means lack of combustion air or leaky injector(s) but I would not expect all 4 injectors to be leaking unless there was a fuel problem, then maybe run fuel injector cleaner through it. Also I would expect it to be very hard to start. Is Diesel fuel old? Bio-Diesel?

I'm going to take all for injectors out and have them tested anyway just eliminate that problem. The fuel is brand new I just put it in I'm running farm red diesel. I have not tried fuel injection cleaner yet but I will tomorrow. Anything else I should check or try to eliminate they possibilities? |

Not running too bad for the most part a little less power though. |

John, this started all of a sudden? Other possibility is intake valve adjustment but it would get gradually worse. We had BD-154s in B414D, 434 and 384. The one in the B414D we put well over 15,000 Hrs on it before we traded it on a 454. Very dependable engine, fuel filters, oil changes and air cleaner was all that was required.

Pull the valve cover and make sure you don't have a broken rocker arm, or that a push rod has broken. It would be easier now than after you have removed the injectors............just in case. |
