I went to look at a couple of G's yesterday only 20 minutes from home. The one that struck me was a '49. It's an old restoration or old paint job - not real bad, not nice either. The tin isn't bad, but not dent-free either. It's been stored inside. The engine is stuck but the owner said it was running three years ago. Fuel tank smelled of varnish. Coolant couldn't be seen so it was probably drained. Owner said that if not drained, it had anti-freeze. Structurally it looked OK - no noticeable extraneous welds nor cracks. Muffler wasn't original type. It needs two rear and at least one front tire, but the rims look good. The tool bar and parallel lift linkages and levers are there. It has a Woods belly mower on it, which I don't want. I offered the owner $1,500, half what he was asking. Was I in the ballpark or is he? |

You are both in the ball park. If it was running, in shape you describe and with good tires and mower his price might be O.K. But as you describe, with bad tires, and not running, maybe needing lots of work, at least with fuel system (and with varnished tank, you will need carb overhaul), I believe your offer was generous.

You're about right, two rear tires $250-300 ea
rear tubes $70+ each, maybe $60-70 for front tire and tube, then maybe some engine work? I'd be careful getting in much deeper, to easy to find a better one in the $2500-3000 range |
