purchased a huber tractor today and i am in need of some info and parts possibly. the tractor has a stearns engine in it with a bore of 5 1/2" engine tag says it is a stearns model EU # 303885. there is a tag on the left rear fender that says the tractor# is 10657. the head gasket broke when i took the head off to get penetrating oil into the cylinders to free the engine up. tractor seems to be complete for the most part except for no seat and the exhaust manifold has been welded and patched many many times, any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Treat everything in/on the engine reverently; I haven't heard mention of ANY Stearns engine parts sources, other than other collectors and possibly some of the profe$$ional obsolete parts dealers.
olsonsgaskets.com (highly spoken of) and gasketstogo.com (sponsor on smokstak site) can make any heeded gaskets, as well as other outfits that'll come up on Google.
Stearns engines didn't appear in very many tractors, but were heavily advertised to the road/heavy const eqpmt builders, and looking for info/parts should include hcea and the Cat sites, on the premise that Cat collectors/enthusiasts know a lot of people with old heavy eqpmt pieces lying around.
A 38 Victor catalog shows the EU as 51/2x61/2 and lists it with two others of the same b/s: the MEU and MER, but, oddly, lists the cyl head gasket as fitting the BU (5x61/2), the DU (51/8x61/2) and the EU, but not the MEU or the MER...ahhhh: the MEU and MER were marine engines, probably with more water cooling in a special head.
That could be another place to look for parts/info: marine engine sites like oldmarinengine.com. With sympathy, Bud

Remembered I had some Stearns notes; there's a fair short history in the 1-2-77 GEM under Gile tractor notes and in a Practical Machinist article on Gile/Stearns that'll come up under Stearns Motor Co (Stearns was involved in Gile Eng/Boat Wks which became Stearns Motor)...Stearns (a timber/lumber baron) apparently quit engine business, closed factory, sold eqpmt 1930 or so.
The engines had a reputation of being built heavier than most and"underrated" by the factory, consistently putting out higher power than rated.
Eyeballed some old parts catalogs; only other EU listing so far is Baker 25-50 for 1927-28, but others may show up; I'd assume in marine use they'd be in working boats rather than sport or racing types like Erd.
Huber catalog listings are contradictory and confused, but one lists the "1926-35 25-50, Super 4, 40-60 and 40-62....Stearns ER, EU and EU4"
I have no idea if the ER is a modif or variant of the EU, or if the EU4 is actually another designation for the EU 4cyl; it's also possible these may've been options or production changes. I don't have the ER or the EU4 on my Stearns engine list, but none of my lists are complete.
Looks like other Huber/Stearns owners are your best bet for info/parts/sympathy; can email a list of other tractors using other Stearns engines if you'd like (it wouldn't be very long!).. Bud

Just wondered how it's coming and what kind of luck you've had finding parts. I have a 40-62 myself that's decent but stuck that I'm going to have to tear into one of these days.
