A friend of mine has a 1965 MF G-176 continental 4-cyl. The starter housing broke in July, and was replaced, now it broke again today. Anyone know what could be causing this to happen? I hope the model is correct. I,m orange, not red. |

Timing is wrong and it's kicking back when you try to start it, retard the timing some or check out the distributor advance mechanism to make sure it's not sticking or binding in an advanced position. |

Make sure there is a thrust washer on the shaft between the drive gear and the starter housing bushing. |

I also forgot to mention that it was backfiring badly. First, we tried to adjust the carb. screw to no avail. Then we changed the points and condenser, and afterwards it wouldn't even start. I suspected a bad coil which he replaced, and that's when the starter housing cracked, trying to get it running. I see the coil was still good. Thanks for the info on the dist. advance, which makes sense on the back-kick, cracking the starter. |

make sure the ring gear teeth aren't damaged or missing a tooth or something stuck between them,if the starter has been rebuild make sure that the correct starter bendix was used with the correct number of teeth |
