My NAA has quite a bit of play in the drag link ends at the joint that connects to the steering sector at the box. Is the whole drag link usually replaced in this situation or just the end(s)? Do the drag links come with the ends on them? If so I guess they would just need to be adjusted to fit the length of the old ones. It looks like they are less than $100 each to order. |

i have done both, replacing just ends, or even fabricating tubes.
while at it.. address all play in the steering system, including steering worn thrust, sector gear backlash, spindle bushings, tie and drag link ends, and front hubs.

If the tubes are straight and not mangled I always just replace the tie rod ends.
Just finished replacing the fronts on a similar tractor about 10 minutes ago.
Cost was about $25 for the pair. Not hard to do.
The fronts are left hand threads.
Easy job and definately makes the tractor steer nicer.
I usually use anti seize compound where the tie rod end screws into the tube but am out of it so I used grease instead.

I bought a used drag link for 30 bucks for a friends 8N.The left side end was shot. Those long tie rod ends are not serviced, that means you cant get them.I found that the right drag link on my 640 is the right length to fit the left side of an 8N.CNH dealer wanted 150 bucks for new parts so I called Wengers .30 bucks included ups 5 years ago.Dennis Carpenter may have the long tie rod ends now but the price will be high. Many of you ignore used parts but they are better quality than the import stuff.Wengers will ship good used parts, try them. |
