4420 hydrolics

I need a little help with the hydrolic valve on my 4420. This would be at the valve body under the cab where you connect the hose for reel lift when useing the grain head. I needed to take the fitting out on this connection in order to get the elbow next to it out (threads got damaged and needed to replace it, was fixing the steel line). Thought it would be simple, but a small restrictor orfice fell out. It looks like a hex head off a bolt with a groove cut across one side(top or bottom) and a very small hole in center. I need to find out which way it goes back in - groove up or groove down(next to fitting/coupler). I looked on JD Parts but they don't show which way it goes. Any help would be appreciated. (This also gets connected to the variable speed feederhouse cylinder when using the corn head.)

I think your talking about a flow rate control valve. I can't figure out how the heck it goes in either just looking at the JD parts catalog - the hydraulic section is a mess....

Grove up Paul. work with them orfices alot, Deere uses them on lots of things

The restrictor plate you are talking about, does it have threads on the edge or is all of it bolt head shaped. If it has the threads, I would say it goes back in so you can tighten with a large screwdriver in the slotted portion. Don"t know for sure, just taking a shot in the dark as some restrictor plates I have messed with before screwed in.

No threads on it. Only about 3/16" thick or there about, all in a hex shape like a bolt head or a hex nut.

After thinking about it awhile, and talking with the service guy at deere (he didn't know, and couldn't find out from the book either) that's what I was thinking. Groove up would allow more oil to flow back in, i.e. when lowering the reel, and less oil pass when going out, i.e. raiseing the reel, because the flat side will seal somewhat against the fitting allowing oil to only pass thru the restrictor hole. Giving better control raising the reel at engine speed. Thanks Sideconsole4020guy.

Looks like I will have a good bit of time to work on it as the center of Sandy got within about 30-40 miles northeast of me today. Pushing close to 4.5 inches rain this afternoon, since Sunday from her, still rainning and spitting snow last night and today. Mountains 30 miles east got 18" of the white stuff. Corn fields probably won't dry out til sometime next week if we don't get any more rain. If there is anything left standing - I haven't had the heart to go look yet.
