I have a 1977 815, same size as the 715 only with more creature features. Handles a 4 row corn head good, 15 foot platform max in green stem beans. It's a diesel. If it's an older model gas or diesel less capacity, if it's a late model german diesel will be like an 815 except for bin capacity. They made them till 1979 I think, someone will know for sure, but they were still making them when IH went rotary.

A 715 is no way like an 815! The 715 was a warmed over 403 (a great combine by the way) with new sheet metal and maybe a nicer cab. The 815, although using the same width cylinder, was a larger machine with much longer sieves and a larger engine. It had the new side mounted cleaning fan (which worked OK if some additional air baffles were added) and it had the new swing out unloading auger. The 815 also had two production models along with the larger 915. The first "high" model was, for all practical purposes, worthless. The second "low" model could be a decent machine if understood. The rotaries made them all moot!

They are a good machine. Make sure its the later one with 800 series heads. The 715 is an easy combine to work on compared to 815 and john deeres.

1979 was the last year, if you can find a late one with the diesel you will have a very good 4row machine. 13ft platform is a good match as well. I have a buddy that has had three of these now and his latest is a 1979 and it does an excellent job. Only issue that he mentioned is something to do with the spot welds or fasteners in part of the grain bin have seperated, easy fix though. He is farming 200 acres with his.

I have a very late 1978 715 with the 310 german in it. For a smaller farmer it really is a hoss. I run a 13ft platform on mine and you can go a a pretty good clip even in 45+ bu beans.
