I'm trying to confirm whether the Gibson model A was ever used as a tug by the Air Force during the WWII era. We got this information from the seller, but the tractor doesn't have a data plate, and we don't have any information about previous owners. If anyone has any information, I'd be much obliged. I'm posting to this forum because this seems to be the group with the most information specifically about Gibsons.

I was thinking about contacting the Gibson Tractor Club (gibsontractors.com) to ask them, but it seems like the organizer of that group, sadly, might have passed away earlier this year (I found an obit while doing research). Does anyone know if that group is still active under new leadership? Are there other Gibson clubs out there?

Thanks so much for any information you might be able to share!

Kind of hard for them to be used in WW2, they didn't start building them until 1946.

(Personal opinion - no data to support) I doubt the Army Air Corps/Airforce was buying new tugs shortly after WW2, they had so much "stuff" left over from the war that huge amounts of support equipment were being sold cheap as surplus during the intial RIF that kept going on until Korea started. New jets got the money while everything else made do. It took Korea for congress figured out that we might still have to fight.

Thanks so much for your reply, dhermesc. Very good point about the timing.

The Gibson Tractor Club history says that the Navy had commissioned Gibson to make forklifts during the late '40s and early '50s. Obviously a different branch, but it makes me wonder if there could be any modicum of truth to the claim/speculation.

I'd still be curious to know if there are any active Gibson clubs (or Gibson history buffs) out there.
