1650 and 1655 Repower

Hey guys,

I am looking at repowering both a 1650 and a 1655. Besides stock engines, are there any engine(s) that will bolt into these tractors with very little or no modification? If so what engine(s) would you recommend as a simple and efficient repower?

Gas or diesel? For pulling only or farm use? Are you looking for more power? Whats the reason you don't want to use a waukesha? My opinion, its hard to beat the waukesha for a good combination of power and fuel economy. Don't put a straight six automotive gas engine in it. I can't see how they could be an improvement. I don't think there is a simple swap unless your putting in a 310, which will bolt right in. If you want more power and reliability, plus a quick and simple swap thats the way to go. A gas or a direct injected non-turbo 310 can easily make 100 horse if its built with all the updates and some upgrades in the injection system. I've heard of people swapping a cummins but that would require a different tub, most likely from an 1850 diesel. If your on a budget stick with a waukesha.

a 310 fits right in. You can get plenty of power out of a 310. Most
people love the rigid durability of the 283 that is stock in the
1650/1655

The 283 is a pretty good motor. I saw on Maibach tractors website that they offer parts for a cummins conversion. This will cost some money but make a nice tractor.

Would have to be a diesel engine(s). Tractors would be used for light farm use, maybe the odd pull. I don't have anything against Waukesha engines, it's just neither tractor has an engine in it so whatever will fit in without too much work I will consider.
