Had been discing with my 706 gasoline tractor today for an hour or so, running fine just like always, when it sputtered a couple of times and then just smothered out. Seemed like a fuel problem to me, so I checked for a good flow to the carb. Had it. Couldn't get the small drain plug out of the bottom(square head rounded off) but did remove the fuel solenoid valve and had flow out there. After sitting, tractor will start and run only a second or two then die. Could it be the solenoid valve gone bad? What do they do when going bad? Stick in the "shut off" position or what? Don't know what else it could be. Anyone got any ideas?

Diagnosis is first.
Pull off the coil wire and see if it has spark. 1/4" blue and crisp to the block.
If spark, does choking it a little when it fades make a difference. If so it is probably fuel related. Float stuck plugged inlet to carb, or other issue. Help with more information. Jim

The only way I"ve ever had them fail is closed, in which case the engine won"t start at all. As Jim says, sounds like a fuel problem.

You should be able to hear the solenoid click when you turn it on or off. If you put your hand on it you can usually also feel them click. Unplug the solenoid and power it staight from the battery to test it.

On our 706 gas, we had a problem with fuel delivery, we had to take carb apart twice, but finally found it. There was a blockage in the carb( not sure what the name is) but there is a small tube inside the carb with 3-4 different little orfices drilled thru the sides and they were plugged with dirt and gunk.Cleaned them out with a torch kit cleaner replaced the gasket on the carb bottom,it started and ran fine after that. Hope it helps.

The only real way to check the soliniod valve is to take it out and plug it back in turn on the key and check to see if it moves in and out. I have had dirt get in mine and it still clicked but it didnt move because of a little dirt stuck in it. Thats an easy fix if thats your problem.

They are telling you correct. That dang sol gave me problems for the longest. Called Marks Carb and Magneto Service. They have the replacement set screws to replace the darn thing. It is called a Load assembly. Phone is 320-393-7272 and eamil is markscarb@jetup.net. It was 15.00 plus 3.00 shipping Worth every dime of it. They will know right off the bat what you are talking about.

IF the shut off solenoid goes bad then they will not run . And do not replace with a half arrsed fuel metering screw , that soleniod was put there for a reason . Check with a test light to see if you have power with key on , if you have power then remove the solenoid and ground it and turn the key on to see if the pintel moves in . NOW BE CAREFUL as not to cause a spark with gas layen around or you just may be getting a new tractor and building . The pintel (needle) should move in about and 1/8 to 3/16 of and inch so that you are in full fuel and seat in the main jet to shut off fuel with the key off so that you do not have run on when the engine is HOT . Now maybe a good time to remove the carb and do a tear down on it and give it a good cleaning and check for dirt in the main jet area.
