|
|
My alternator conversion just gave out. It used a first-generation Delco 10DN with a separate VR, so I am thinking of replacing it with something newer.
The 10si seems to be the universal choice, but they are getting old now too, which has me wondering whether there might be something newer I ought to be considering, that would be more compact and not hang out in the rain. |

Kyle,
Saw your post and name looked familiar. Did the governor parts work? Turns out that I had the wrong carb on my 8N. Hope the parts worked out.

The 10si was supplemented by the 12si in the 1980s for a higher output lower cut in. The CS121, CS130 and CS144 came along in the 1990s. The 121 and 130 are smaller and are advertised higher output the the 10si but they have a digital internal regulator and the rectifier is a little more fussy when subjected to 1950s era farm tractor abuse. Tens of millions 10si alternators have been built and proven in the fields and give the most bang for the buck. Good luck with your choice. Mike |

get a 10si
there are a bajillion of them out there, meaning good parts support for years to come.
sure.. you can get newer and smaller and pay lots more.
cs130 is a choice if you need smaller.. but it will cost ya.
a good cheap 10si can be had for 30$ with your core, new.(reman)
that said.. if you 10dn has a tach drive.. you might be able to sell it's core to a 3 cyl owner needing a rebuildable 10dn, for more than the 5-15$ core money.. |

The reason the 10SI is used is because they are as common as dirt and cheap also. You can buy a 10so for around $45 if you have a core which you do have and that is with a life time warranty to boot I know because I have probably 10 tractors that have the 10si with life time warranty's on them all from O'Reilly's |

The 10SI is probably the best choice for an old tractor.
A few good articles about Delco alternators:

Use a 10SI you can even use the 10DN wiring with 2 simple jumpers at the regulator... |
