Have a 5130 (1990?)4wd with 4200hrs with standard transmission. Recently noticed when moving and depress clutch it comes to a stop as if a brake is partially on. More noticable if moving backwards. Yesterday notice when in 4wd and doing loader work the front tires shuttered and then periodically gripped. The rear tires were spinning. When I disengage the 4wd I do not notice the "release" of tension on the tires. I"m afraid to take to the dealer as I have had poor and expensive service there before. Want to try diagnostics myself so I at least know where to point a mechanic to.
First time using this site. Thanks in advance for any assistance on this hatefull tractor!

I wish I could help.
I can only offer a few points.
Try putting this on "Today's Tractors", and/or on the Case/IH forum on this site.
On my 5230 4x4 partial power shift, the MFWD is mechanically engaged with a spring. It requires hydraulic and electric power to disengage it.
I have only owned this for a year. It has 7000 hrs. I recently replaced some of the solenoids which control MFWD, diff. lock, three point, etc. because the wires were giving out just outside of the coils.

First of all, do you have any other hydraulic issues with it, like poor lift capacity or slow operation of hydraulics??

The front axle is engaged by a spring and disconnected by hydraulic pressure, so it needs hydraulic pressure (and electrical power) to stay in 2wd...

The dragging you feel makes me wonder if you have low hydraulic pressure or perhaps a park(hand) brake issue. The clutch in these tractors is a hydraulically engaged wet clutch, and it"s housed to the rear of the transmission housing, not next to the engine. Also do you notice if the clutch is sharp to engage (especially in the higher ranges)?

To check the front axle hydraulic system, locate the mfd valve body, iirc it"s above and to the rear of the main hydraulic pump, up by the cab frame(it"s a squarish block, with an electrical connector out of the top - the solenoid- and a pipe coming out of the rearward face and then into the transmission housing). Take the solenoid out and check it operates correctly (apply power and you should be able to hear it click) and that the o-rings are in good shape.

Hi Yes I have had hydraulic issues in past - hence the "hateful tractor" comment. Actually many issues. In last year had to ih shop for hydraulic issues and they "reset" pressures. Seemed to have been corrected, but now not so sure. Have noticed can't lift the same and loader is slower. I'm running out to combine corn. Will test some of the other suggestions tomorrow morning or when I get a chance. I appreciate your comments and will replywith my findings.
Thanks,
Lar

Lar, send me an email...

I have a 5240 (1997) and have also had hydraulic issues over the last couple of years... my tractor suddenly developed poor hydraulic performance and then the powershift/shuttle started to get really jerky...

One of my best friends used to work for an IH dealership and managed to get the workshop test books and test kit for this series of tractors and we still had a heck of a time to figure out what was wrong... it took both of us nearly 8 weeks to figure it out... (thankfully not all day everyday but still)

turned out to be something relatively simple, just very hard to find..
