I bought a 285 in good shape, brought it back to the shop and started adding a new loader valve. Now it will not turn over, the starter makes a hard klanck and sounds like it is engaging. The batt tested strong, The wires all look fine. It started and ran 6 times just fine since I bought it. Not sure where to start. Loader is down and no steering so I cant"t even move it. It may have been bumped by a truck and the HYD fluid is low but I cant see that causing the problem. |

The dual battery setups seem to always have issues in the cables connecting the battery closest to the starter. Many times this will do exactly what you describe. The cable looks great visually, but the connections to the lead terminal do not connect to the cable. Not easy to diagnose because a meter will show 12 volts, it will drop to 10 when someone hits the starter as it should. But there is no amperage to roll it over. My bet is in a cable from the starter to the battery. |

Hi
Don't know if you fixed this But by some strange chance you haven't put a mounting bolt in for the loader thats too long in the bell housing, and it's touching/jamming the clutch or fly wheel so it wont move.
seen a guy do it once on an old universal tractor. then rip the motor apart for no reason other than his stupidity because he thought it seized in the shop lol.

Thanks for your input and that was a good thing to check. I did run jumpers to the starter to increase cable area with no change. I was able to jump to the starter and make it spin. I then turned the key to get the klunk and then jumped to the starter and it turned over. It turned slow, but it is cold and the touch connect does not carry many amps. Smoke rolled of the back of the solinod bottom terminal. Must be a back solinod??? |
