Been doing some small projects on the 50, front mount, 6v these past few weeks. Haven't used it all that much or worked it hard at all.
I've been noticing that the engine will throttle up nicely to about 3/4, but struggles and stumbles at anything past that. I cannot get it to WOT. My carb is adjusted correctly and runs really sweet until 3/4 throttle.
What I see is that once it hits about 3/4, the governor will push the throttle plate toward the wide open position even though the dash throttle lever has not moved. When I bought the tractor the tab for the governor spring was broken on the linkage arm and the spring was held on by some tie wire; i did not touch it.
My question is how much, if any, spring tension should there be at idle and the governor in the "home" position? I will be checking the electrical and putting in new/cleaning the points before it gets too cold. Plugs are AL 437, new less than 20 hours on them. |

Governor spring should have no preload or slack at
the closed position. |

Good. Thanks.
Looks like I will be adjusting the governor tonight. The bearings and shaft were good, but the balls did have some flat spots. Think I will rebuild this winter, if this doesn't improve things. |

Flat spots on the balls are a more likely cause of
your symptoms. |

So if I understand the function if the gov...crank turns gov, balls ride on plate, as balls get further away gov opens throttle? The balls are the weights and flat spots give intermittent/improper function?
Sure it needs a thorough going through just don't want to miss the small things. |

As the balls get farther away they CLOSE the throttle. |

With the tractor running. Grab the gov to carb rod
and open up the carb. The gov should fight you. When
you have gov off the tractor. Spin the gear with
your fingers and you will sell the gov arm pull back
away from where the carb would be. |

Gotcha...thanks for the info. I have disconnected the gov completely and it did take full throttle. The gov seems to be acting up and either dumping too much gas or restricting it at different times. Gonna put a set of points in for the winter (cheap) and fix the governor so it'll work when I need it. |
