The thermal capsule (copper colored tubular part of stat) should go toward the source of heat.

What a huge bypass port!

You have it in backwards, the bulb end should be in the engine block or it won't open properly.

Jim, do any of these pics look right, it looks like you can not have it upside down because then the two thermostat housing pieces can not be bolted together...
I am looking at it and I cant flip it around, the first picture is of the lower thermostat housing with the thermostat fliped and it does not fit, the second picture is of the upper thermostat housing and it has a round recess for the tube part of the thermostat, am I missing something or do i have the wrong thermostat? I know i ordered one for an M. thanks for the help guys

Picture is the way that type themostate goes.
Doesn't it have a arrow on the side that says to radiator? Looks like the same one NAPA sells.

You had it in correct, as you can see it will not
go the other way. If that tube fits into it's hole
in upper housing freely it will more than likely
leak around it and definetely not stick.

Here is what I would do now that you have it off,
is take fan belt off so water pump won't turn,
fill as much coolant as you can get in right at
the engine. Start engine and coolant should not
move. If it rises up you have a combustion leak
causing heating problem. You have to do this
quickly as it will start to rise as soon as it
warms so you have less than maybe a minute to take
a look.

Put a thermometer in the pot. Stat should be open by 180° or sooner, not 212°(boiling water)
