model 800 hydraulics

The hydraulics on my 800 are extremely sluggish in the winter weather. They work fine in the summer. I have to let the machine warm up for a long time to get them to work. I changed fluid a couple times but it still acts the same.I would really appreciate any help on this problem. Thank You.P.Z.

#1 what fluid do you use?? #2 what fluid do you use in the rear end and transmission??? If you use a UTF or such hyd fluid in the hyds and a 80W-90 or such in the other 2 the seals between the rear and the trans could be bad and mixing fluid which will cause that problem because the hyd fluid becomes thick like to other 2 and then you have problems. I would drain all 3 and put in UTF in all 3 and if the problem goes away you know why

I'm with Old on this. Are you using Universal Tractor Fluid (UTF) in the hydraulic sump? It is thinner than 80/90 weight oil and does not thicken up so much in the winter.

My 8N has 90 weight oil in sump. In the winter, its slow as molasses. My 660 has UTF in the sump. Work just fine all year.

and to go farther.. are you using a decent utf fluid.

some of the 20$ a pail utf has terrible cold pour point.

you need one m2c134 compatible

Hello Kurt , I have been through this many times here on the board but not with you . 80 / 90 WEIGHT MINERAL OIL is the spec for 800'S OR 801'S also NOT GEAR OIL . Don't listen to the crap you will here about out dated oil specs , the oil made to the old specs is just as good as any other oil on the market when made by the large brand names like the ones I use , TEXAS REFINERY CORP. , MYSTIC BRANDS , KING OIL , VALVOLINE plus many others . Crap like WAL-MART and TRACTOR SUPPLY don't make the old spec oils because of limited sales THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE MONEY , Same with crap from NEW HOLLAND it is a FITS ALL OIL they do not care if your old tractor lives or dies because it does help them sell more new tractors . If you are using 90 weight GEAR OIL in your 8N that is not correct , you should be using 90 weight MINERAL OIL and it will work fine all year round , that is the correct spec oil for the N's . UTF is too thin for those pumps and add to the fact 50-70 years of wear it makes it worst still . Any decent Parts supplier or Oil Supplier can get it very easy as Over The Road Class 8 Semi's still use it in their transmissions . Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,

I am using 90 Wt mineral oil in my 8N. It works just fine. Just a bit sluggish in really cold weather. After about 5 minutes of warming up it is OK.

It could be that the "unloading" valve in the lift is not moving good. Worn out O ring or just binding and not moving all the way to the "up" position.

Have to take the lift off to fix.

Thanks you guys for all the tips. I was asked what type hydraulic oil I was using. Its Massey Ferguson hydraulic-trans fluid. Before that I tried some TSC brand fluid. I was just reading the label on the Massey stuff and it was for the older models that shared the same fluid for the differential, trans and hydraulics. My 800 hundred has separate compartments, so I may have been using the wrong stuff all along.I am going to try to find some of that 80/90 weight mineral oil that was mentioned in one of the tips posted. I have had the 800 for at least 15 years and it has always acted very slow in the winter until it was all warmed up. I usually keep it in the garage in the winter to keep it warmer but this year I can't so its in the barn where its real cold, so I thought I might finally try to fix it. If you get new oil for you 800's hydraulic sump, get Universal Tractor Fluid that meets the Ford MC134D spec. Something like this at TSC

Do not use 90wt mineral oil. That is for use in the 9/2/8N tractors not the Hundred Series tractors.
