Harbor freight has a 2000lbs 12 volt electric winch on sale. I have never owned a winch and have no idea what can be done with a 2000 lbs winch. Disregarding that it may be a piece of junk, is a 2000 lb winch worth buying? I have no other use for it then mounting it on the front of one of my 8Ns to pull out stuck vehicles or to move heavy objects. Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey John,

I purchased one of them winches from Harbor Freight, recently.

I mounted the winch on the front of a lawn tractor for raising and lowering a snow plow. Works great. The Harbor Freight store in Harrisburg honored a coupon that I found in the Frederick Sunday Paper. $49.00.

The project proved out to be the best way for raising the JD blade that was fitted up to an old Sears tractor.

Hope this helps. By the way, at the price, I am sorta thinking about purchaseing another winch, just to have around.

I have one about like it (8K),,, its moved every thing I have hooked it to... I searched Jeep forums and found the Superwinch I brought to be the beast bang for the buck that's reliable....
I can not locate the model I have at this time I paid $399 for it and $50 for a roller fairlead... I made my own mounting plate...

I have a couple cheapo ones.
a 2000 to lift my snowplow on a NAA
and a 3000 on a 4-wheeler.
they pull fine...for light duty
a snatch block makes them act 'bigger'
the cheap little ones seem to have weak brakes,
but they do pull ok.

I have zero experience with winches but I'm wondering, wouldn't an 8000 pound winch move your jeep or tractor before moving an 8000 pound object?

I can see where even a 2000# winch would be good for that. Is the front bumper on an 8N sturdy enough to mount a winch on?

As to mounting it on the front of your 8N, you might be better off with a good chain with hooks or a cable with same. The tractor weighs approx 2700#, with the brakes locked on on maybe slightly more effective. If you have a 4,000# unit to pull out of the muck/ditch, guess what ?

A winch should be rated for 1.5 to 2 times the weight of the object you want to move. That said I had a 3000 lb Harbor Freight mounted on the front of my GEO tracker. Used it once to move a tree that had fallen across the road, not a real big tree but not a small one either.

Save your money, years ago I bought a 2000 pound "winch". I wanted to use to load my trailor with a car ,truck or tractor. I hooked my 41 9-N at the base of my trailor and tried to load it. Didn't even get to top of ramp. I thought maybe the battery was not good enough so brought my truck, with the engine running as close to the winch as I could and still could not get my 9 on the trailor..

It is for sale anybody?

The only way that 2000 pound winch would move 2000 pounds is if you use a three part line. That is with two snatch blocks. Then it might pull 2000 pounds.

post a link to it? I have a 4k 1 2v winch from HF.. black plastic kind. ( same as the reese that walmart sells for 90$ by the way same model # on tag.. just different main sticker.. :)

it is setup to do single cable.. or double the cable for half speed and more pull.

obviously does more rolling laod than dead pull.

It's the winch I have always taken with me when fetching tractors.

I can tell you for sure it will pull a 53-64 era non running, but rolling.. ( flat tires even ) ford tractor onto a trailer if you have a car battery setting on the trailer.. I always take a battery with me when fetching tractors too.

I can tell you also that while it did not like it.. it greatly assisted loading a e350 converted passanger van onto a trailer from the side of the interstate. we doubled the cable and had a man on a come along helping.

got that huge van loaded.. would have been a nightmare without the winch.. as I can tell you i HAVE loaded vehicles of that size on my equipment trailer using nothing other than ratchet straps and a high lift farm jack setup to pull or push... ugh.. what NOT fun that is. :)

My standard 'go' rig now has a full set of tools, jacks, hi lift and bottle and screw type.., wheel chocks, cribbing timber. spare battery. air up tank and small compressor, winch, and spare battery. electrical tool kit including truck and trailer spare lamps and fuses and doo-dads and butane powered solder iron.. extra flat brad trialer wire and crimp kit.. spare trailer plug.. lots of e-tape and bailing wire, also have an inverter built in to side of tool box #1 on te truck, and a power outlet at rear of truck as well as a work lamp and 12v plug accy at both of my 7 pin locations in bed and at bumper. this rig also carrie extra diesel and a gas jerry can, plus 1 tool box (#2) of just needed emergency fluids for truck or could be used on another auto.. I have my old set of hoses and serpentine belt from last service in a trash bag plus extra clamps too. good set of led work lights.. prybars and irons.. etc.extra CPS for the 7.3 powerstroke too. truck is my 99 450 with 3 tool boxes and 70g xfer tank.. setup to pull gooseneck, 5th wheel, 4 ball sizes and pintel if really eeded. air bag suspension ... has a 4.88 rear so she don't go much over 73.. but will pull the proverbial house doing so... she's old.. but works..

Bought a similar winch at Northern Tools, Mounted on front of 9N, use to lift snow plow and brush rake. works good for that. Haven't really used it for a big job. wouldn't expect too much from it.
