Does anyone know the proper installation depth of the front seal on a 135 AD3.152 diesel? I'm guessing 1/4 to 3/8". Mine is leaking a tad around the housing but the seal is close to being flush so I think that is the cause. |

The housing is designed so you can move the seal slightly if the
shaft gets worn, yes.... the rubber lip will wear the crankshaft. I like
to make a spacer piece so as I am sure the seal is sitting squarely in
the housing.

The thing you are missing here is there is no dowels in the front cover, A centering tool is required to center the cover before the seal installation. If i"m sure you do not have one is to install the seal, leave the cover a little loose, start the engine and tap the cover a little one way and the other to center it. P.S don"t install the fan less you loose a finger or two... |

Gentlemen thank you for the help.
I got the new seal installed and it stopped the oil leak. My cover hadn't been removed so it was a matter of popping the old seal out and seating the new one.
To seat it squarely I took a hunk of high density polyethylene plastic and on my lathe turned it down to a "hockey puck". I then bored it the same dia as the crankshaft. Finally I reduced a section of the puck outside diameter slightly less than the seal and about 1/4" deep. With a hammer I was able to tap the "puck" over the seal pushing the seal in perfectly. Come to think of it, if I did need to center the cover a similar "puck" would be just the tool to do it.
