52 8N Electrical Partially Solved

Thanks to all who have helped regarding brother's 52 8N electrical problems. Special thanks to OLD for his "hot wire" suggestion.

Coil forward is now fine. Tractor starts well and runs fine - with electrical circuit/devices from coil forward. Problem was with the side post of distributor. I now have 3 sets of points and condensers in the trash from burning 'em up while trying to find and solve problem.

Tractor will not start when remove jumper and go back to all wiring and devices. Actually get a 6v reading input to coil. But tractor will not start unless "hot wire" as mentioned above.



Next step is to check out devices and wiring from coil input back - one at the time - to find the last, or at least one of the last, problems. Will begin Monday.

Ok so it runs with a hot wire so next jumper the ignition switch and see if it runs that way. If it does bad switch if if does not then check the wire from the switch to the battery and ALL connections back to the battery

Are you saying, in effect, that the current would have stopped at the point of the short thus nothing downstream of that point would have been damaged? Hmmm? Plugs don't spark with such a short, thus no current to plugs. Hmm? Makes sense if I'm understanding you correctly.

Not sure that I want to mess with a currently operating system to see if they work; but may dig 'em out and put a question mark on the package???

I almost never throw away any old parts. I have a Ben I throw them in so if I ever need something and do not have the time to go buy it I look in my old parts stash and most of the time can clean them up and get by for a long time
