cold starting and adjusting gear shift

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has helped me in the past, and recently, on tech questions concerning a 1066 that my friend and I are working on.
The tractor had a severe cab fire, and we spent a lot of time, getting this tractor in shape to use again, and it felt wonderful when it moved on it's own power again.
Since getting the timing right for setting the injector pump, it now starts up, but even on a nice day, (50 plus degrees) if the motor isn't plugged in and warmed up, it won't start. I know it has an ether can for starting, but first, I don't know how much of a shot to give it, and when (during cranking,or before). We have a 966 that has not failed to start in moderate weather like this one is.
I don't want to grenade the engine with too much ether, is what I'm getting at.
Second, I've been able to drive it now, and found out reverse didn't work, and was able to fix that with an adjustment on the linkage.
I'm sure your going to say do the same with the Hi-Low range linkage, as it doesn't quite click into Hi, it grinds and won't engage.
Also, the other gear lever, it goes into 1st ok, but 2nd thru 3rd, I kind of have to hunt for, as the lever doesn't line with the gear shift indicator.
4th gear only grinds too.
I'm looking for a solution, so I don't have to have to leave the tractor running, and try adjusting the linkage, then trying etc.
There has to be a proceedure that the shop mechanics follow.
