Hello
So I am a new owner of a 158 loader, looks very heavy duty, looks even more than the 148.
It came with no controls so I added a joystick to the tractor, a Prince model. Hooked to the rear remote for now, everything works and I am sure there still might be air in the lines but I am getting some chatter in the lines and I can hear a little strain on the hyd pump even when not moving loader.I really don"t think the noise is right and I would like to correct it. It suppose to be a closed center valve. Any ideas .
Thanks
Robert |

The control valve needs to be closed center, you will cook the hydraulics if not so. A much better way is to tap into the hydraulics on the elbow below the right foot rest. |

As previously stated the valve is either open center or there is a relief valve set below 2400psi.
Oil supply has been covered. Return needs to be T"d into the rock shaft return line. This prevents front pump starvation and cavitation. A ported filter cover works good too.
Which 4020 and which transmission? It does make a difference. |

Also if it "is a closed center" it may have a relief valve set to low and by-passing causing this... |

Disconnect return hose from sump. With both hyd control spools in neutral crank engine and if oil spurts out of the return hose then the hyd valve is open center or relief valve is set at too low psi. |

These come from the factory set up for open center use. If you didn't swap the plug yourself, that's the first thing I'd check. The closed center plug is bought seperately and has an O-ring on it. These valves also have a pressure relief on them that is adjustable. I think they are set to 2000 psi. Your tractor system pressure should be 2250 psi. I bet that relief valve is warm. I'd start turning it up until you don't feel or hear any chatter at the relief valve or just screw it in all the way. The stock valves I've seen didn't have this adjustment. Just bought a Prince valve for a 146 loader. Didn't know it was bigger than the original valve. Now I have to fab up a new mount for it. Won't fit the old one. |

Probably a ported trans oil filter cover. Checked to make
certain it wasn't a PS and have the return oil connected to the
PS filter.
The addition of a T or drilling and taping the rockshaft
return line elbow would be the economy version and work just
as well.
I wonder if the fellow from last week with the loader
problems on the Dubuque/Mannheim . If he ever relocated the
oil return line from the fitting above the pto shaft. And used a
ported filter cover? |

I have seen some people state a ported filter cover will not fit a 4020. What are your thoughts b&d?? A T31170 ported filter cover isn't available from A&I. |

T31170 $196 I have drilled and taped the original bowl, it works out but not as well as the factory bowl, if you do this be careful not to tap too deep the fitting will go in to far and hit the filter, try a fitting as you go... |
